A report produced in partnership with the Hispanic Heritage Foundation found that “[...] STEM fields are missing out on talented Hispanic students because of lack of confidence and preparation, NOT due to lack of aspiration or potential.”

Further research indicated that “Hispanic students on average come from families with more language barriers [...] and fewer connections to STEM professional networks .”

Parents

Parents make a key cornerstone for STEAMinis. They are the managers behind every kid, they have to drive kids from/to our workshops and evaluate the success of each session.

In our first attempts to make our services available, we discovered parents had a lot of questions. Here are some answers we have complied to the most common questions.

We focused on delivering our workshops in the right venue endorsed by the right sponsor, in a safe environment for both kids and parents.

Volunteer

STEAMinis is an organization made by people interested in contributing! All of us volunteer our time, knowledge, network of contacts, etc. We cannot survive without the generosity of the STEAMinis community. If you want to be part of it, here are some activities that always welcome an extra pair of hands:

Run the workshops.
Be one of our guest speakers.
Mentor a kid/family that has a kid interested in the STEM field.
Translate content from English to Spanish

Notice that all these activities can also be done remotely. One good outcome of COVID is that almost all of us got comfortable using virtual meeting rooms.

Donors

Here is another finding from running our workshops: some STEM materials are expensive. The materials and chemicals needed for the experiments, the access to good online content/instructors, the access to lab equipment, electronics, or simple safety equipment or non-toxic coloring add up! Sure there are many online STEM kits for children or young adults, but all of them require a significant investment. Not at STEAMinis. all our workshops are offered free of charge to participants.
